M/V Mermaid 2 is a 32 metre, double engine steel motor yacht, one of the most comfortable diver boats around, she easily accommo dates 16 guests in 8 deluxe cabins and 2 guests in a budget cabin below deck. Th e budget cabin is below deck with twin bunks, air conditioning and a large shared bathroom with 1 other cabin. There is also tea and fresh ground coffee making facilities and fridge to keep the beer, wine and soft drinks cold, we hope you will feel right at home.
Our 8 double a/c cabins offer all the comforts you need. Deluxe cabins offer a large panoramic window. All cabins offer private en-suites with hot water showers and sink, camera-charging outlet, storage space, wardrobe and life jackets.
There is a wide stern dive platform with two exit ladders and fresh water
showers. The dive deck is huge with plenty of room to gear up,
individual boxes for your dive gear, camera table and loads of rinse tanks.
The dining room is located on the main deck where delicious buffet style Thai and western meals are served. The saloon is large and spacious with lounge suites and big windows, bar fridge, tea and coffee facilities, Tv/Dvd, music center, library and a full selection of marine life books. There are two outside decks, the shade covered party deck has recently added a brand new custom made extra large lounging suite.
The sundeck, located in front of the wheelhouse has a full sun, cushioned lounging area that is not only great for catching some rays but also for watching the sun set with a beer.

The Bathrooms use normal amenities, western toilet, hot water shower and hand basin with outside window and extractor fan. Each cabin has a double bed on the bottom with a single bed above making the cabin available for couples or singles. All cabins have a cabin wide sea view letting in the day light and scenery as we cruise to the next dive site. Each cabin has life jackets and smoke detectors for your safety and piece of mind and storage in the drawers and under your bed to keep your cabin uncluttered and tidy.

Sorong is the harbour town in West Papua and the normal departure point to dive Raja Ampat. If you are unsure of how to get to Sorong to start your trip it will depend on where your international flight into Indonesia is landing. If you check this link it will give you more of an idea of the timings and even a map of the possible routes to show you your possible options - www.arenui.liveaboarddiving.net/#getting_there.
It is not possible for someone outside of Indonesia to purchase domestic flights in Indonesia so these can be purchased for you by me, if you would like, and added to your invoice. It will be about $600 return dependant on exchange rates, availability and where your entry airport is in Indonesia. We recommend coming through Jakarta as the quickest and easiest route to take. The cost of the domestic flights are not included in the trip price.

From Jakarta it is possible to reach Sorong in one day.

If you come from Bali to Sorong it is a 2 stage process, from Bali (DPS) to Makassar (UPG) and from Makassar (UPG) to Sorong (SOQ), there would be a night in a hotel in Makassar on the way out (Ujung Pandang and Makassar are the same place and the half way point to Sorong). We recommend the Imperial Aryaduta in Makassar- http://www.aryaduta.com/hotels_home_makassar.php

It is also possible from Singapore to Manado on Silk Air and then onto Sorong with a over night in there somewhere depending on your arrival times of your Silk Air flight but the Manado to Sorong flights don’t run every day so you may end up spending an advance night in Sorong which is not a particularly interesting place to spend the night.
It is also possible to get to Sorong from Kuala Lumpur via Makassar on Air Asia with an overnight stay in Makassar and then catch the 09.35 flight to Sorong on the day of the departure.
We recommend the Imperial Aryaduta in Makassar- http://www.aryaduta.com/hotels_home_makassar.php

Domestic Air Carrier Notes:
It is generally not possible for someone outside of Indonesia to purchase domestic flights in Indonesia so these can be purchased for you by Premier Liveaboard diving and added to your invoice. It will be $600 return normally dependant on where your entry airport is in Indonesia.
Premier liveaboard diving and its local flight agent can purchase the tickets on your behalf, however, in doing so, Premier liveaboard diving is only acting as an agent for the airline and is not responsible for, and can accept no responsibility for, cancellations, delays, schedule changes, or problems caused by the air carrier.
We highly recommend trip interruption and cancellation insurance.

The area known as Raja Ampat (or the Four Kings) is an archipelago consisting of the islands of Misoool, Salawati, Batanta, and Wiageo which are surrounded by over 1,500 small islands and cays. Formerly known as Irian Jaya, this area is now part of the newly named West Papua province of Indonesia and is located on the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula, on the island of New Guinea.

Put simply, Raja Ampat could quite possibly be the best diving in the world. It certainly is the world's most biodiverse marine region with more recorded fish, coral and mollusk species than anywhere else on Earth.
According to the Conservation International Rapid Assessment Bulletin the marine life diversity for diving in Irian Jaya is considerably greater than all other areas sampled in the Coral Triangle. The Raja Ampat area is considered home to more than 1,000 fish species, 101 of which were previously unknown in Raja Ampat and four that are new to all of Indonesia. A world record 284 sightings on one single dive was set at Kofiau Island. A benchmark figure for an excellent dive site is 200 fish species sightings, this was surpassed on 51% of Raja Ampat dives! There were 537 coral species and 699 mollusk species - again another world high.
The variety of marine life can be staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs. In Mansuar, you may encounter large groups of manta rays and turtles. From the boat and often close to shore you may get the chance to don your snorkeling gear for some unforgettable interaction with resident pods of dolphins or even some passing whales. Other highlights include the innumerable war wrecks, both ships and planes (with new wrecks being discovered constantly). The reefs of Raja Ampat are just as varied as the marine life. There are vertical walls, reef flats, slopes, sea mounts, mucky mangroves, lagoons and pinnacles. The reefs are in pristine condition with miles of perfect hard corals and many varied colorful species of soft corals. The diving is predominantly drift dives due to the moderate prevalent currents in the area which provide nutrients for the myriad fish and coral. Currents are averageto moderate and vary from none to very strong. Due to these currents and the number of wrecks, Irian Jaya is not really considered a destination for absolute beginners, rather for divers with a few dives under their belts looking to get away from the crowds. Visibility is normally very good but can vary and is normally at its best earlier in the day so your pre-breakfast dives are not to be slept through!
The pristine beauty of the area, both above and below the water is truly unrivalled. This success of area's staggering abundance of marine life can also be attributed to the areas incredibly low human population density. Its remote location and lack of infrastructure have inhibited the growth of tourism.
This is truly "Frontier Diving". Topside the beautiful islands stretch as far as you can see and are largely uninhabited. At night the lights of local fishing boats twinkle in the dark along the few inhabited shorelines while in more remote areas you may only see a distant spec of light over the entire horizon.
Not many liveaboards dive the Raja Ampat area, making this adventure even more unique and special.

Day1
Check-in on board MV Mermaid II. As guest arrivals take place all through the day depending on flights you are welcome to board when you arrive and spend some time looking around Sorong, gearing up etc. Following the boat and safety briefing - its overnight to the Misool area. It is almost impossible to put together a daily itinerary due to the magnificent diving everywhere we go. No trip is the same with so many different sites to visit and explore. If there is somewhere in particular you really have your heart set on please discuss with the Cruise Director who will do their utmost to get you there – conditions, ship and your safety allowing !
Day 2-4
Misool area – with literally 100s of dives around this magnificent area we will be in divers paradise for a few days. Soft corals, gorgonians – some of the pretties corals in the world – and the kingdom of the pygmy seahorse ! Pinnacles with masses of fish. Blue water mangroves (crocs depending !) Islands we will thoroughly enjoy the Misool area including Sagof Islands, Wagma and Farondi islands; Wailbatan and Warakaret Island, Kalig, Pele Islands
Day 5-6
Fiabacet and Farondi Islands and after the 3rd dive of the day spend some time going around the lagoons in the dinghy for amazing sights and wildlife. Then we may head north to Waigeo Island
Perhaps we will spend the day around Batanta Island, a black sand environment – great muck diving ! The Mantas call us to Dampier Strait where they hang out at their cleaning stations. But this place is also fabulous for macro diving with critters such as Pegasus, Pontohi Pgymy Seahorse, pipefish etc. And two dives at a small island called Arborek, with a lovely village and a jetty great for diving ! The jetty pillars are covered in soft corals – a photographers delight and also good for macro such as signal gobies, nudibrancs and more Pohtohis etc. Dive around the island of Kawe a great place for schooling fish, and beautiful reefs covered in black coral bushes. And dive Alyui Bay (or a full day around Alyui Bay). In Alyui Bay there is a pearl farm. We can tour the pearl farm and learn how they harvest the pearls, and the whole process of pearl farming. You can even buy pearls. Diving in Alyui bay is good for macro and wide angle. Walls covered in soft corals and sea fans with lots of nudies and pygmys. Also a great night dive in the jetty; Raja Epaulette Shark (walking sharks), wobbegongs, crocodilefish, toadfish and frogfish.
Dive around the island of Yanggefo - beautiful mangrove areas, stunning reefs covered in orange and pruple soft corals, and submerged reef with lots of schooling fish, and pygmies. The Strait of Dampier are also well known for the amount of schooling fish. There are several pinnacles with zillions of fish . Also the tips (capes) of several islands with again lots of schooling fish; schools of barracudas, school of big eye jacks, snappers, zillions of fusiliers and surgeonfish, etc…. And lots of wobbegongs
Day 6-7
2 dives in the Strait of Dampier. More of the same. Fish, fish, fish, glorious corals and all ! Then back to Sorong we must go. The crew will take care of rinsing and packing your equipment during this 4-5 hour run
Day 8
After breakfast we transfer you ashore to the airport for your flights home

Number of Dives / Site selection: |
The dives are planned subject to weather conditions and security/safety issues. Dive site selection detailed in the published itinerary is subject to change by the Captain or Cruise Director without prior notice. There are numerous fantastic sites in Nusa Tengarra and Raja Ampat and our objective is to take you to the best of the best ! Repeat guests – we’ll take you to some new sites or more of those you really love ! |
What diver certification level is needed for Raja Ampat liveaboard diving? |
Everyone is welcome on board, no matter what level your certification. Dive groups and site selection will be chosen to meet your safety, comfort and diving ability – and is subject to the discretion of the Cruise Director. Our professional dive crew will take you on the easy route or to another site if you don’t like currents. If you are up for it, we’ll take you right into it for all the action the site offers ! You may wish to bring a reef hook for some dive sites. |
Dive Guides and Diver Safety: |
Our experienced dive crew would be delighted to assist you. Divers are welcome to dive with their buddy on sites deemed suitable by the Cruise Director. All divers are required to dive with a dive computer – available for rent on board if you don’t have your own. Nitrox fills and courses are available on board to enhance your diving safety. Please allow 24 hours between last dive and flying. Guests are requested to show diving certification cards on checking in and are strongly recommended to have valid dive insurance (Padi, Dan or equivalent). |

Raja Ampat liveaboards water temperature and wetsuit recommendations: |
The water temperatures is approx 26-30 degrees (northern dive locations) – a 3-5 mm shorty is okay with most guests comfortable with a 3-5mm long. |

|
Rental equipment is available on board. Our tanks are 12 litre steel and we have a few 15 litre steel/aluminium tanks available. Tank valves are international and some DIN adapters are available on board. Any dive equipment failure or loss will require you to rent a replacement from Mermaid Liveaboards at our published rates. If Mermaid Liveaboard equipment is lost/damaged, full replacement cost will be charged at the discretion of the Cruise Director. Published equipment prices will be available on board. |
Meals: |
Our cook is excellent, preparing a variety of Asian, Indonesian and Western dishes…even Barbeques ! Please advise any special meal requirements on the guest information form. |
How much money should i bring? |
(Currency: If possible, please pay all on board costs in Indonesian rupiah.)
Up to you but we suggest you have some rupiah for souvenir shopping in Raja Ampat, trip dvd, massages, small items etc. The airport’s rate is lower than the rate you find at most small currency exchanges. Bank rates are low and take a long time. US$ are accepted in the Raja Ampat National Park but rupiah is preferred. |
Luggage and what should I bring on a Raja Ampat liveaboard : |
All luggage will be taken on board. If you have large bags you do not need on the trip, please arrange to leave at your hotel if possible. |
I want to dive Bali as well: |
There is loads of excellent diving in and around Bali as well. Contact me if you fancy diving in Bali also. Detail how many days/diving days you would like, where you are staying and what sort of diving you would like to do and I can recommend a package to suit. |
